Abstract
In this study, the problem of dam break wave propagation over a dry bed in a horizontal rectangular channel was
investigated. Dam break event was represented by a sudden removal of the plate which has water on the upstream side. The
experiment was recorded by video cameras and water level variations at three different locations were obtained by image
processing techniques. Numerical results were obtained by using the free software called BASEMENT which was solved by
finite volume method of 1 dimensional shallow water equations and compared with experimental results. As the water level
changes obtained by both methods were examined, it was observed that the results were in good agreement.
