Job Analysis in Manufacturing Industry and An Application in The Furniture Industry

Abstract
The importance of manufacturing industry, which has the largest production value and employment volume, is increasing day by day in economy. Furniture industry with rising production value and employment levels has the potential among large sectors of Turkey. However, there are some problems faced by the furniture industry, which is dominated by smallscale manufacturers. Some of these problems; inadequacy of technology production, financial difficulties, raw material problems, energy shortage, lack of skilled labor and the requirement for modernization in production and management of enterprises. Job analysis is the detailed examination of the qualifications, skills, activities and conditions needed for the work to be accomplished. It is possible to solve many problems and increase the productivity in the organizations with job analysis using techniques such as functional job analysis, critical event technique, situation analysis questionnaire, time study and method study.
The objective of this study is to improve the productivity by implementing a job analysis in the furniture sector, which is one of the sub-sectors of manufacturing industry. The application was carried out in a production facility with 50 employees operating in the furniture industry. Method study and time study, which are job analysis techniques, have been carried out in the application of job analysis. The studies were performed in the furnishing workshop. There are sub-frame and top-frame creation and assembly stations in the furnishing workshop. As a result of the method study, It has been determined that the stacking of the top frames caused the problems. It has also been determined that there are occasional problems on the labels prepared by the operator. Saving of 3% in total time were achieved, depending on the corrections.
