Çok yaygın kullanım alanı olan domates bitkisi, patlıcangiller familyasındandır. Anavatanı Peru ve komşu ülkeleridir (1). Aztekler tarafından adı ‘tomatl’ konulan domates şu an dünyada patatesin ardından ikinci sırada en çok tüketilen sebzedir. İspanyollar domatesi 1519 yılında Avrupa ile tanıştırmışlardır (2).
