Abstract

The estimation of the sediment yield for Coruh watersheds should be determined in order to calculate the lifespan of the dams that are being already build. In order to determine sediment yield, information regarding topographic situation, vegetation, climate, soil characteristic, and human factor is needed. The use of GIS-based erosion prediction models such as GeoWEPP, which was introduced at this stage, provide significant convenience. In addition, areas sensitive to erosion are identified. Olur micro-catchment is identified by Coruh River Rehabilitation Project as a semi-arid region with an intensive erosion rate. By using the GeoWEPP erosion prediction model, soil losses and sediment production from the watershed were determined. The model has been run in 25 sub-catchment within the watershed using 20-year climate data. As result, a yearly sediment load into Ayvali dam has been determined.
