Abstract

Spatio-Temporal Change Analysis of Forest Areas in Turkey for the Period of 2000-2017

The rapid and unconscious consumption of natural resources, due to the rapid increase in the world population today, causes significant environmental problems. For this reason, the determination of the current state of natural resources and the monitoring of temporal changes have become indispensable for natural resource management. As an ecosystem component, forests have a great importance in terms of economic, ecological and sociocultural aspects and provide numerous benefits to humanity. With the concept of “sustainable forest management” discussed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio in 1992, it is critical to monitor the loss of forests at global, regional and local levels for future-oriented decision making and planning. Sustainable planning of the forest ecosystem of Turkey, which has a very rich biodiversity, is of great importance not only locally but also globally. In this context, the determination of spatio-temporal changes in forest areas is one of the most important procedures to be carried out for sustainable forest management. In this study, the temporal changes in forest areas in Turkey for the period 2000-2017 were investigated on the basis of provinces. In the analysis, Global Forest Change data which are produced based on the analysis of Landsat satellite images was used and spatial changes were determined in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment.
