Abstract

The Role of the Nurse in Psychosocial Adjustment to Diabetes in Individuals with Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the lives of individuals and their families in various ways, requiring mandatory lifestyle changes, and reducing quality of life due to its complications. Like all chronic diseases, diabetes is common, requires continuous treatment, and can hinder the normal psychological and social development of individuals of all age groups. Diabetes is a chronic disease that leads to mental and cognitive problems in addition to physiological complications, and it takes time to cope with it. Psychosocial adjustment to the disease encompasses a wide range of areas, including healthcare adjustment, professional environment, home-family relationships, sexual relationships, extended family relationships, social environment, and psychosocial pressures. The possibility of developing chronic or acute complications, and the imbalance in blood sugar levels, can lead to psychosocial adjustment problems. Furthermore, the inability to achieve psychosocial adjustment to the disease can lead to inadequate self-care behaviors, accelerating the development of complications. Diabetes is increasingly affecting people worldwide, leading to biopsychosocial problems, and patients are forced to learn how to cope with this disease. Being a diabetic patient causes individuals to feel hopeless in many areas. Nurses are the most important support providers in the psychosocial adaptation process of diabetic patients and their families. Nurses play a significant role in the education, treatment, monitoring, and self-care behaviors of diabetic individuals. Understanding the psychosocial adaptation to the disease in diabetic individuals will guide nurses in ensuring good disease management and preventing or delaying potential complications.
