Abstract

Mobility Levels and Classification of Postoperative Patients in the Cardiovascular Surgery Intensive Care Unit

This study was conducted to determine the mobility levels and classification of postoperative patients in the cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit. The study was conducted as a descriptive-cross-sectional study with 30 patients followed up in the Intensive Care Unit of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine, between September 29, 2018 and October 20, 2018, following surgeries such as coronary artery bypass, heart valve replacement, intracardiac mass removal, atrial/ventricular defect closure, etc. The Patient Information Form, Patient Mobility Scale, Observer Mobility Scale, and Functional Ambulation Classification (FAS) were used as data collection tools in the research. It was determined that 33.3% of the patients were in the 50-59 age range and 56.7% were primary school graduates. It is observed that 100% of the patients have chronic diseases, and the rate of those with coronary artery disease (CAD) is 76.7%. The average total score of the Global Observer Mobility Scale is 7.97±3.69. The average total score of the Patient Mobility Scale is 14.70±6.04, and the average FAS score is 2.57±1.36. All correlation values between the Global Observer Mobility Scale and the Patient Mobility Scale and the FAS score were found to be significant at the p<0.05 significance level. In conclusion, it can be said that as the Global Observer Mobility Scale and Patient Mobility Scale scores increase, the FAS score scores will decrease. The nurse should explain to the patient the importance of getting up early after surgery. Patients should be encouraged to get out of bed as much as possible after surgery. Early mobilization reduces pain, shortens hospital stay, and reduces care costs.
