Abstract

Determination of Janka Hardness of Mulberry, Sycamore, Red pine and Cedar Woods

Solid wood and wood based composite materials have different hardness values depending on the type of wood they are obtained. This feature is an important factor in the use of wood. In this study, janka hardness values were determined on sycamore (Platanus orientalis L.), mulberry (Morus Sp.), red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) and cedar (Cedrus libani A. Richard) wood according to TS 2479, standard. According to the variance analysis, the tree type and test direction differed significantly but the interactions were insignificant. According to the analysis of variance, when the tree type and test direction were obtained significantly, the interaction was obtained insignificant. In all tree species, janka test results in transverse directions were observed to be higher than those of tangential and radial surfaces. In addition, although the hardness values of the tangent surfaces in mulberry, sycamore and red pine woods were higher than those of the radial surfaces, the opposite situation was observed in cedar wood.
