Abstract

A Study on Purchase Preference of Generations X, Y and Z in New Product Development Process

Global competition, technological innovations, shortened product lifecycle, and changes in customer profile make it necessary for companies to analyze consumer behavior in order to develop new products according to customer demands and expectations. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the demographic characteristics of Generations X,Y and Z and their tendency to buy new-technology mobile phones during the new product development process. The study sample consisted of 240 participants from Generations X,Y and Z living in Samsun. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face survey using the scale developed by Ekşi (2017) to determine consumers’ purchasing preferences. The scale consists of 6 subscales; new ideas and existing knowledge, product functions, perceived benefit, service, experience and attitudes towards advertising. The Mann-Whitney U-test and Kruskal-Wallis H-test were used to determine whether the demographic characteristics of Generations X,Y and Z had a significant effect on their purchasing preferences. The analysis result showed that gender had no effect on the purchasing preferences of Generations X,Y and Z. The analysis result showed that there were significant relationships between different dimensions of purchasing behavior of Generations X,Y and Z and age, education, occupation, marital status and monthly income.
